1932: Firemen

October 10, 2018

Christchurch fire fighter drill, 1932. Illustrating the social and physical fact that men are better suited to this job! In 2018, and for a few years either side, our society entertains the social fiction that women are as capable of being a ‘fire person’ as this crew…

“The photo showing fire fighters becoming proficient in the correct method of carrying an unconscious person from a building.”

An unconscious person is dead weight and will fall right off the carrier’s shoulders. If you look carefully, the lifters have secured their load by holding onto their burden’s left arm like a strap.

This photo published in the Auckland Weekly News. Given the times, perhaps it was part of the governing regime’s show of power. Strong, organised, capable, uniformed, ‘fighters’ on display to reassure stricken citizens during a time of Great Depression. A bit of signalling to the rioters of Auckland (and Wellington) from earlier in the year of what they will be up against.
