Today in New Zealand History, 8 August 1867, Unveiling of Godley’s statue in Cathedral Square; Christchurch, the city he founded.
“Farewell Cathedral City!- And its Square, Its Founder foundering in a pot of tar.”- W.D.Cresswell poem, c.1935
We may suppose Godley’s statue base was seated in tar seal during this time, making for a the sort of witty poetry I appreciate.
