W Franklyn Barrett, colour film footage of Buller Gorge in 1910.
Wonderful to have!
Seldom do we have film this old (and this good) of New Zealand. In this case the editor has also taken the trouble of using the Pathecolour technique to add in some greens and browns.
If I understand correctly, the final film is a blend of the usual black and white footage but overplayed with a hand-cut stencil video track. When the double-layered film is projected it comes out in colour! Quite a bit of work but given the wonderful effects it seems a wonder to me it wasn’t used more often because visitors to the cinema would flip out to see such things.
