1940s: We Will Remember Them

March 28, 2019

Enjoyed watching the WW2 re-enactment at the Helensville A&P Show back in February. These men suddenly came alive and became interesting when they became active on the hillside above the kid’s rides.

A reminder that war memorabilia and retro equipment is a huge part of Kiwi cultural history. Any swap meet or army surplus store is full of it. All our grandpas who came back from WW2 brought home a little something. A little bit of German military equipment to remember the experience. Indeed, any RSA you can name probably has some captured German or Allied artillery on display out front.

There is absolutely nothing incriminating or weird or out of place when it comes to owning or enjoying military collections. It’s Kiwi as.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them-  Laurence Binyon

Humans are a tactile lot. We don’t just remember in an abstract intellectual way, we remember by touching and owning and showing objects.
