1943: “National Savings”

December 18, 2020

By AHNZ

This image (left) is a propaganda poster from 1943 in which the Government attempts to tax New Zealanders even more; This time it’s a tax on Statism and stupidity.
The New Zealand State was following the example of Britain (National Savings) and the USA (Defence Bonds/War Bonds.)
Evidently Labour 1.0 was hard up for cash so they poured heaps of it into expensive promotional campaigns to extract more contributions from the people.
“This Big Stick and ‘Applied Christianity’ approach to Kleptocracy got a make-over toward the end of the year by someone with a smoother touch than Nash. By the end of the year it became ‘The National Savings Movement’ with its own local bureaucracy and target meter in a town square near you.”- 1940: The National Savings Movement

FB comment: Which Ship is that? please.

AHNZ: Probably inspired by RNZS Achilles.

FB Comment: Anarchist History of New Zealand thanks for that. I thought it may have been the Royalist.

AHNZ: Well, it’s art so if you like it can be Little Toot the Tugboat.
You’re one of those pragmatic and concrete kinds of people aren’t you? 😉

FB Comment: Anarchist History of New Zealand ha love the comment, 😎 my friend served on the Royalist, just showing my lack of knowledge of Naval Ships. 👍

A Government investment scheme to get hold of our money so they can spend it now. Labour 1.0 also threatened to make these war bonds a ‘compulsory loan’ if people didn’t start “investing” voluntarily.
“The most important thing to remember is that inflation is not an act of God, that inflation is not a catastrophe of the elements or a disease that comes like the plague. Inflation is a policy.” – Ludwig Von Mises
“Inflation has the great advantage of evoking an appearance of economic prosperity and of increase in wealth, of falsifying calculations…Inflation makes it possible to divert the fury of the people to ‘speculators’ and ‘profiteers’. Thus it proves itself an excellent psychological resource of destructive government] policy.”- Ludwig Von Mises
I can totally see Labour 6.0 doing this given sufficient pretence such as a war or other national crisis. But, then, they don’t have to do they. All that is required is masses of money printing. The cost of this is, quite involuntarily, spread over the wealth of everyone by the most insidious taxation of them all: Inflation. Does this make New Zealanders even more gullible than we were in the 1940s? I guess it does.
Unfortunately the FB post this started out as has been more or less lost as tends to happen in the shifting sands of Facebook. That’s the major reason I started this website, least we forget.
