1988: Nuclear Free Zone
June 9, 2021
By AHNZ
Today in New Zealand History, 8 June, 1988, the Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act 1987 was made law. By doing so, our Government (Labour 4.0) made a huge unilateral security decision to cut this country out of the ANZUS Treaty (1951.) Who was defending New Zealand now?
The best part of the docudrama Fallout (1994) is the OH SHIT moment when Prime Minister David Lange gets pranked on the phone. He’s at his desk on the 9th Floor of the Beehive and someone tells him an invasion fleet is in-bound for New Zealand! The Chinese are coming to collect on all their loans and our ex-ANZUS partners are standing by and asking Labour 4.0 if they’re enjoying their new Nuclear Free lifestyle…
Anyway, I can’t share that bit, only remember it, but here is an extract that is online. Generic Labour grandma makes it all worthwhile for Lange by shoring up the fantasy that he’s saved the children…
