1990s: Social Capital Tanks

June 23, 2019

A child buying groceries solo…”This Is Not Neglect. Not a Crime. Not Abnormal. WE Are Abnormal”

I must disagree. It’s not brainwashing as to the limitations of our children, it’s a rational calculation based on our knowledge that the Social Capital is so low in our own communities now.

“The idea that kids can’t do anything alone till they’re 29 is NEW, as this vintage ad reminds us. A young child could run an errand, talk to an adult, be patted on the head without this being inappropriate, and lug home half a gallon of milk. All that was an integral part of our culture until relatively  recently.”- Let It Grow

We don’t know each other, don’t look out for one another, don’t have informal networks to keep our property and families safe. Part of that is that the chief agents, women, stopped doing that and became workers.

Another part is that men stopped being trusted as protectors or even safe around children. This phenomena kicked off in the 1990s during the Satanic Pannic Victimhood Culture phase and is with us still.

Exceptions may exist in more provincial areas. But as the Megacities take over and absorb the old municipalities, churches, newspapers, TV and radio stations, schools, markets, and schools this vintage and viable culture is more and more passing away.

The above image-link leads to a nice quick talk entitled Modern Childhood Is Strange. Dorsa Amir highlights how far our culture has strayed from giving our children the childhoods that made our world. Within a week TEDx have re-named the video to be How Industrialization Changed Childhood. That was not Amir’s point or theme at all.

To reiterate, Amir and Let it Grow are right about this change and why we should be concerned. My observation is that it’s not simply post-industrial but a phenomena kicking off from the 1990s. Not letting your kids play in these streets to these shops is perfectly rational- look at what they have become!

“I urge you to celebrate the extraordinary courage and contributions of refugees past and present.” – Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General.

“Today is World Refugee Day New Zealand. Our Diversity Team at Linwood Library has gathered stories for and about refugees, ESOL resources, and info on community groups and resettlement.”- Christchurch City Libraries

Diversity is the enemy of Social Capital….at least that’s how it has been so far. It may be that we can solve that problem so that different races and ethnicities can protect each other’s children to the same values and standards. That would be great. This problem has yet to be solved yet New Zealand is going right ahead and throwing everyone into the great big melting pot with no plan.
