Here is a man who drew the line at a phallic carving being placed in his forest last year. Chief among his complaints is that a sexualisd carving was placed in public and in “plain view of children.” Mr and Mrs Wainwright are good people. Having exhausted every legal means in the book, Mr Wainwright retaliated with the same trick used by the other side: acted without mandate.

Found guilty, he has now been sentenced to fork over $2,000. What happens next, I suppose, is a new $10,000 mega penis is going to be wanged onto the carving and unveiled with great ceremony. Can’t wait.
When Western and Christian monuments are defaced, as the regularly are, prosecutions seldom or never arise. Wainwright is different in that he stood behind his actions and faced the consequences. It’s also different in that this statue is new and in a public place against people’s will.
All peaceful recourse exhausted and all overtures ignored with disdain before the act of civil disobedience. Can the One-Tree-Hill chainsaw perpetrator say that? Can the graffiti artist of Captain Cook’s statue? Rather than prosecuted for vandalisation and publicly ridiculed, whoever defaced this sign of the Orakau battlesite gets public approval. It’s the header image for the State-sponsored Difficult Histories program.

You say you don’t tolerate the destruction of history but you are. You’re destroying ancient Christian history, or backing those who do, in support of Maori history going back 10 or 20 years at most. It is the unmandated forest dick that is unhistorical in this scenario. Find another rationalisation for preferring ‘Māori’ Colonisation of New Zealand and I’ll listen!

Maori culture is one thing but ‘Māori Culture’ is another. The later was contrived as a government programme in the last 30 years or so. New elements such as matariki (est.2001) and phallic carvings are being added all the time, vastly pre-dated by Maori Christian values themselves.
Show me your 800-900 year old evidence of carvings featuring out-of-proportion phallic imagery and you’ll help put this matter to rest. Hell, find one older than the 1970s and that’ll add something new to the conversation.
