1932: Rainbow Springs

May 24, 2021

Rotorua’s Rainbow Springs is out of business due to the hospitality-crushing re-set of our current Labour 6.0 Government. Likewise, Rotorua’s Agrodome is agrodone.

Rainbow Springs opened in December 1932 after entrepreneur Ted Bruce converted it out of a swampy dairy farm. Later, it was joined together with the neighbouring Fairy Springs which is older still.

The Agrodome was also a private farmer’s vision and opened under the patronage of National 3.0, Prime Minister Muldoon posing with the sheep.

“Popular tourism attractions Rainbow Springs Nature Park, Agrodome and Hukafalls Jet have shut with potential job losses after falling victim to the drop in tourism as a result of Covid 19. Ngāi Tahu Tourism announced yesterday afternoon that it will shut tourism operations” – Covid 19 coronavirus: Rainbow Springs and Agrodome shut in Rotorua area, NZ Herald (April 2020)

“The present day owners of Rainbow Springs which to acknowledge the creativity, enterprise and vision of Mr Edward (TED) Bruce in first establishing and developing this park during the years 1931-1940.” plaque placed at Rainbow Springs by the Chartwell Trust (Nov 1991)

During National 5.0’s reign, Ngai Tahu Holdings Corp Ltd. invested their grievance money in both attractions and have owned them ever since. I suspect they wish to wait and see if their historic patron, National, can win the 2023 election. If not, they will either not be able to re-open or else will have to cut a new deal with Labour 6.0¹.
1 They really don’t want to deal with the Ardern Government or else they would have yielded after the 2020 election. Like many other tourist ventures taken hostage, they’re clinging on waiting for the political storm to pass

Recently, in Waikouaiti, North Otago, I bought a pair of superb spirit shot glasses with “Rainbow Bar Rotorua” sandblasted onto Deco style MADE IN NEW ZEALAND artisan glass. Sipping tequila out of one right now. Send email and I will send photos…
