2007: One Day

December 6, 2019

By AHNZ

One Day, was released by the band Opshop in 2007 as a single. It’s a classic with a simple yet excellent video to match.

“One Day certainly worked, picking up a host of industry awards along the way, including the 2008 APRA Silver Scroll for Song of the Year, arguably the highest accolade awarded for song writing in New Zealand.”- nzmusic.org

One of the many things that works about this song is the deliberately light use of Dianne Swann as backing vocals. Far as I can tell she’s made a career of being in the background. You’re left wanting more all the time, wish she would come to the front and belt out the vocal power she keeps teasing with. Swann’s fame grew as a member of When the Cat’s Away whose major effort was the now controversial Melting Pot.

The band’s front-man, Jason Kerrison, was Invercargill born and Christchurch raised. Son of a Nga Puhi tribesman father and Anglo-Saxon mother, Jude, he moved to Auckland where the band is/was based. Kerrison’s mother now has a wealthy husband (though she has not taken his name) from an African tribe. Gitonga ‘Mich’ Obadiah, from Kenya, is trying to move to New Zealand now to be with his wife but Immigration New Zealand is not convinced the relationship is genuine.

“Mich received correspondence from INZ rejecting him from living in New Zealand with Jude, while questioning the legitimacy and credibility of their relationship.”- Opshop frontman Jason Kerrison gutted over Immigration New Zealand’s decision to deny step-father visa; Newshub

Jason has been using his pull in the media and with Facebook friend and Labour 6.0 Minister, Kris Faafoi, to cut what he calls the “seemingly xenophobic immigration policy”  red tape.

“Hey bro – I will make a call on Monday. I know it is genuine as I know you travelled for the wedding a few years back. I will talk to the people that can speed things up.”- Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi promised to ‘speed up’ immigration process for Opshop singer Jason Kerrison; Stuff

The musician seems to have grown tired of waiting and cranked up the pressure by releasing this conversation to the press. Instead of hurrying up the politician and making the Kerrison Christmas brighter the story has broken. Maybe Jason should stick to music, not politics? The results may crater his new Dad’s chances at being a Kiwi and take will Faafoi down a bit (or a lot) and make it harder for me to get another song out of Opshop as good as this one. Damn it man!

Absence make her heart grow fonder
While I’m conquering the last frontier
Lately I’ve found myself wonderin’ out loud
Wonderin’ what I was doin’ here
I can’t offer you the future – I don’t know it myself
All I can offer you is me
I can’t offer you a visa – Faafoi’s process is not fast,
My son says he can get us both on TV
